CRACKED SKULL II – DAMN ROCK FROM THE
DAM WALL

AGE 12
Family members had
arrived to our house for a visit.
Somebody came up with the idea that
the family goes down to the river.
As we walked down the hill, a
certain adult stopped me and blew their nose on my T-Shirt.
Need I say anymore, I was really
upset.
As soon as we reached the
river, I sat down against the dam wall and sulked.
After some time the adults decided
to walk further down the river.
I made no attempt to follow
them, so my sister and my cousin stayed with me.
First thing I did after the adults
disappeared down the river, I pulled off my shirt and threw it on the
ground.
My sister and cousin were standing
on top of the dam wall and started a competition. They tried
to see who can throw the biggest rock, the furthest.
Normally I would be smack in
the middle of any competition, but I was still sulking at the
bottom of the dam wall.
After some time my sister
and cousin started a debate on who had won.
The dam wall was about 4
meters high and the rocks they were using was about 5kg each.
So they each got 1 more rock
and asked me to watch and determine the winner of the last
round.
My cousin went first
and made quite a distance, so I walked a few steps and marked
the spot.
Because I was still upset
about the boogers blown on my shirt that was all I did, in
silence.
My sister started bragging
that she was going to beat my cousin’s success.
She actually told me to take
a few steps back.
After I did, she asked me to
go back a few more steps and she started bragging that she was
going to throw it right over me head.
I guess my mind was elsewhere
because I followed her instructions, and I guess we were both
totally wrong in the end.
Along came a 5kg
rock from a 4m wall, and smack on my head.
I started walking up and down
with my hand on my head; I could feel the pain pulling in.
My sister and my cousin were
standing in total silence, stunned by the blood that started
pouring out of my head.

I told my sister, I really
have to go find my mom, but we must stick to a story and tell
her it was a mistake.
I do not remember in total
what we talked about but we knew she was going to be in big
trouble. When I turned around, I saw
the adults returning so I quickly ran to them.
I started explaining how my
sister accidentally threw a rock on my head…. and then I can’t
remember anymore.

Next thing I
remember is I woke up on a couch in the living room, with my head
already bandaged, x-rays lying next to my couch.
And of course my skull was seriously
cracked.
And that’s all I remember,
maybe I passed out again, because I do not remember seeing those family
members ever again, only my grandmother I saw again.
So my lesson to everyone who needs
it; never stand at the end of a rock throwing competition :-)
