DISSAPEARING INTO THE WILD AFRICA

 DISSAPEARING INTO AFRICA 1

AGE – 3

My mother’s biggest fear in my childhood was the fact that I was not scared of anything, and I often disappeared into the African Wild.  I had a lot of moments like this one.  Her and some colleagues were researching and camping in one of the Northern forests.  What work they were doing there I don’t know exactly but it had to do with Nature Conservation.  Apparently every night I scared everyone at the camp by disappearing into the night. Panic availed, this was a seriously dangerous African forest.

Residence of crocodiles, leopards, pythons, hyenas and the list of dangerous animals is even longer.  I suppose I could even throw in Black Mamba’s, Cobras and occasionally even Hippos wondered up the river.

I would sneak away to collect bull frogs and reptiles in general.  Apparently, almost every time I came back with some different reptile or an even bigger frog.  The biggest frog that I ever found was half the size of my chest, quite a wrestle for a 3 year old.  I know I had these frogs and reptiles as pets for my first few years but I never realized how vicious they were.  I can only remember that I just went straight for them and I had no fear for them.  Nobody really believed me about the size of these frogs, so later when I was older, I asked a friend to come with me.  Mostly to catch snakes but I made a mission to find these frogs. After quite some effort we did catch some of these frogs and it was then that I realized how viscous they are.  You’re probably find it hard to believe me but it’s true and very funny.  These frogs attacked us.  We caught a few and placed them on the ground.  The biggest one started croaking and headed straight for us, some of the others also followed.

It was really hilarious that frogs were attacking us.  We were teenagers, so they weren’t much threat to us, but they seriously tried.  And we had to stop their attacks by putting our boots in front of the frogs.  And they really did bite our boots.  These large bullfrogs survive off other frogs, lizards, snakes, mice and even rats.
