AGE – 8 Of course it was another injured animal on the verge of death that my mom picked up and looked after. The hyena healed and we kept him because my mom didn’t have the heart to have him put down. And no, he was not a pet, but he used to run up to the fence when we were close and run around like a puppy looking quite silly. We never had any intruder whilst we accommodated the hyena. Unfortunately at one stage we rented out one of the houses on our property and this led to the death of the Hyena. The hyena had a fairly large area and he seemed content to us. He never tried to escape Before. I assume he appreciated being alive. The renters then decided to slaughter a cow, and they did it right next to the hyena fence.
The fence was fairly high, composed of mesh fence and electric fence wires. The scent and vision of blood and meat for many hours must have driven the hyena crazy to the point that he jumped the fence. The renters locked themselves inside the house, and after some time drove after the hyena trying to scare him back into his area. This was never going to work, so they called our house. It was only me, my sister and my mom at home. So my mom grabbed her gun, a .357 magnum, locked us in the house while she went to shoot the hyena. I heard the 2 shots, and we were told later, 1 to bring him down and the other one to put him out of his misery. My mother was a real good shot and she had a really big gun. She had no choice but to kill the hyena due to our renters. What I missed was his ‘laughter’ at night. And the way he used to scare people walking on the border of our property. It was not unknown, our other neighbors had lions and cheetahs and once some farmer brought us a leopard that he had caught in a cage trap. We were a bit sad when my mom didn’t want to keep it, and had it put down.
